| Sew it Up |

|
By Ruth Singer Published by Kyle Cathie ISBN-13: 9781856268103 Format: Hardback Size: 255 x 225mm Pages: 304 £19.99 (discount available please see below)
Sew it Up is a great new book by accomplished textile designer-maker and tutor, Ruth Singer. This book will take you through everything you need to know to embark on your sewing projects. It covers both hand and machine techniques used in crafts, dressmaking and soft furnishings, and is illustrated with full-colour photography with tips, masterclasses and projects.
Our reviewer, Kerry Miller, was very impressed with the book. She wrote, “As an experienced ‘sewer’ I was pleasantly surprised that it includes new techniques as well as informative ‘revision lessons’ on long forgotten basic skills. With the emergence of a new generation of people keen to make things at home this book arms the reader with the information needed to start producing great results from the word go.”
The book teaches you how to put in an invisible zip, make your own trimmings and how to alter clothes using pleats and gathering as well as decorative techniques such as appliques. Projects will demonstrate these skills and include clothes, cushions, toys and bags. You can see some specific projects in the images on the left – these are a pom pom blanket, quilted placemats and a gathered scarf.
The book will also appeal to the eco-friendly among you. Kerry explains, “There is much emphasis on ‘eco practice’ with advice on using organic and eco fabrics as well as working with recycled and vintage fabrics – again, a growing trend with the current financial difficulties that many are experiencing. Ruth also goes into great detail over the perfect fabrics and necessary equipment for your sewing projects, enabling newcomers to browse their local haberdashery shops with confidence.”
With over 20 contemporary projects and 20 professional master classes, alongside a treasure trove of over 200 techniques and guides this book is without doubt a veritable ‘sewers’ bible!

| Silk Paper for Textile Artists |

|
By Sarah Lawrence Published by A&C Black Format: Paperback 260x210 mm Illustrations 150+, full colour throughout 128 pages £16.99
Silk paper is an exciting technique that is becoming ever more popular with textile artists. The process consists of taking silk fibres (which are readily available from www.thetextiledirectory.com) and felting them together to make sheets of fabric. The result is a strong but delicate fabric which can be either thick and solid or almost transparently thin.
This fabric can be used for a wide range of products - from scarves and jewellery to wallhangings and embellishments for skirts and blouses. The process is cheap, easy to do, non-hazardous, doesn't require much space or equipment, and the results can be very beautiful. This is an exciting process which textile artists can add to their repertoire.
