Veronica Burningham has compiled a useful and very accessible introduction to the craft of weaving.
A short historical section introduces the subject without becoming too weighty and laboured. This is followed by a brief discussion of colour selection and design which, although not comprehensive, whets the appetite for the planning of customised pieces.
All of the tools and equipment needed for the projects are readily available in most households, with no need for expensive or complex purchases. This in itself is a refreshing aspect to the book.
The weaving process with its simple variations are explained and the projects are easy to follow and varying in complexity.
The stages in production of each project are well illustrated and the text is uncomplicated and sufficient for this level of the craft. Small tips on tension, finishing off and aftercare are welcome additions, with some weaving terms simply explained. A small gallery of completed pieces is also included.
This is a good starter book for both the child and the novice adult weaver alike, laying the ground for more experimentation with both material and design.
