This is a delightful book, with plenty of images to enjoy and inspire. The first section shows images of the author’s quilts. These are generous photographs showing superb detail of the quilt surface, with a double page given to each design. These are pages to take time over, noting the quilt dimensions and reading the informative captions.
The subjects of the enchanted world include birds, beetles, winged insects, fish, amphibians, turtles, lobsters, underwater scenes, and much more. These are beautifully drawn with appliqué and the needle to show fine detail. The colour palette is rich, realistic and intense, with highlights and shadows creating a three dimensional effect.
The remainder of the book is about the different techniques used to create the quilts. There is information about threads, fabrics and making backgrounds, which includes the dyeing process and notes about colour theory. Different appliqué, embellishing and quilting techniques are explained, and finally, notes about quilt finishing techniques. This information helps the reader understand the design and making process that Ellen uses, and then to design and create their own unique quilts.
