Stumpwork Seasons, by Kay and Michael Dennis, is the third book by the authors to be published by Search Press Ltd.

The main project is designed as a single image depicting the four seasons and builds upon the historical tradition of stumpwork. The format of the book allows the embroiderer to follow carefully planned stages (developed by the authors) to create a specific piece of work designed to depict the seasons; or the design can be adapted to depict each season independently, as separate smaller embroideries.

The book has clear introductory information with regard to specific embroidery materials, equipment and the combinations of techniques necessary to create each of the components. Throughout, the book contains very clear photography and descriptors to guide the embroiderer through each of the processes and stages involved. The addition of a materials and equipment list at the start of the chapter for each of the ‘seasons’, is useful to help with forward planning.

The technical information with regard to processes and methods of assembling is shown for each of the components. Framing and methods of displaying the final piece are not covered in the book but the authors have advised readers to access further information via their own website and that of Search Press.

The authors state that the project is achievable by both beginners to the subject as well as more experienced embroiderers. This book will be of particular interest to embroiderers who wish to follow a specified project with a pre-designed theme.
