There are several books written about Shibori, but none are as lovely as this one. It is authoritative, unusual, complex, informative and beautiful, with superb photography.
Shibori, is one of the richest and most beautiful textile traditions in the world. Its fascination lies in the unpredictability of the finished results, which often reveal gorgeous new patterns. As the author says, “Shibori is a wonderful world”.
Eight chapters describe various techniques for dyeing, resist and tying such as Arashi, Itajime and Tesuji. Other mysterious words are the precursors of incredible patterns - Shiorkagi (white shadow), Yanagi (willow), Karamatsa (larch), Kekka (clamp resist), Mokume (wood grain), Maki-nui (over sewn), Hositi yoko kairyo (stripes and lines) and many more.
If Shibori conjures visions of blue and white, then a surprise awaits. Many pieces are multi-coloured to great effect. Janice’s enthusiasm for her craft is infectious and her text is full of ideas, alternatives and challenges. Her book is irresistible.
