The word ‘art’ in the title sums up this author’s approach to embroidered initials. Forget the lettering features offered by modern sewing machines, these monograms are far more elaborate and finely finished. Here is a beautiful source book giving the history of, and techniques for, elegant, “decorative groups of letters, that are linked, intertwined or interlaced...into a cohesive design”.
Clear and comprehensive descriptions of the equipment, stitches and techniques required are given in both text and photographs. Experienced embroiderers will recognise whitework techniques from assorted European traditions. Several ‘stitching legacy’ pages feature heirloom examples with their stories.
With this book you can create for yourself beautiful gifts and family heirlooms. Eight project chapters and associated pattern sheets are provided for embroideries, ranging from cross-stitch embellished lavender sachets to elaborately decorated bed linen and a christening shawl. But why stop there? The skills taught in this book, and the patterns for seven ornate alphabets, could be the starting point for your own designs.
