This book, based on Gina Corrigan’s mouth watering collection of Miao textiles and wonderful photographs of costumes being worn in China, is a feast for both brain and eye and is a must for textile collectors and embroiderers alike. Every aspect of this long and rich textile tradition is examined in detail from the preparation of fibres through to the ceremonial occasions when the most elaborate costumes are worn.

Miao costumes are rich and magnificent yet made locally by the Miao themselves using an amazing range of specialised techniques. Girls are taught from an early age how to make their own embroidered costumes and their skills are lavishly displayed on their festival outfits. Every region has its own style of highly decorated costume often worn with a delicate headress. A dazzling array of sumptuous regional costume form the later part of the book.

The Miao have perfected techniques that enable them to produce richly dyed fabrics, braids, cords, pleats and a wealth of embroidery techniques and all of them are examined in detail. Fascinating case studies give real insight into the construction and embellishment of individual garments. Wonderful photography and wide ranging research make this book an absolute must. It records a rapidly changing way of life. It will provide an endless source of information, inspiration and delight.
