Edited by Ruth Smith and inspired by Gina Corrigan’s collection of Miao textiles, this book brings together the work of ten researchers. It concentrates on the richly embroidered garments made and worn by the Miao women and records skills that are under threat in a rapidly changing world.
Miao work shows an exciting understanding of pattern and rhythm and an ability to combine many techniques to produce a lavish effect. The band of work on the cover is made up of 34 horizontal elements: pattern against plain, appliqué and satin stitch worked over elaborate paper cut-outs, and all bound with fine strips of batik fabric. It is skilful, confident and wonderfully exotic.
Photographs and detailed analysis of pieces show a range of techniques from tin embroidery to pleated braid stitches and provide clear technical information. This fascinating book will provide endless inspiration for all embroiderers.
