Review by Bron Ellis
This is a beautifully produced, large, full colour book featuring 400 photographs of A4 sized quilts. It is a partial catalogue of nearly 6000 monthly quilts made for the Journal Project organised by QuiltArt online between 2002 and 2006. Jeanne Williamson started making weekly quilts in 1999 to document her life and these inspired the project.
Some makers used their monthly quilts to practise traditional piecing and quilting techniques on a smaller scale, some to experiment with materials and colours they would not normally use and others to express deep felt emotions and intensely personal stories in what ever textile medium seemed right to them.
None of the projects were competitions and were open world wide online. It is a very inspirational book on many levels and is a wonderful insight into a project that most quilters in the UK have not had the chance to see. Reading the maker’s story of the quilt intensifies the image, I personally miss this about most textile shows as I like to see sketchbooks and see how the maker’s ideas progressed. It is a joy and an honour to participate in these creative journeys and an idea that could be adopted as a personal challenge to aid our own creativity.
