‘The possibilities of whitework are endless’ say the authors, and the book proves the point. By building on traditional techniques, whitework has evolved from being a fragile and functional craft to become an art-form in its own right.

Whitework can be traced back more than 2000 years to 50 BC when it is thought to have decorated Cleopatra’s garments. White was used the world over as a symbol of purity, femininity and spirituality, and this gentle craft was used to decorate wedding dresses, christening robes, alter cloths, vestments, underwear, table cloths, handkerchiefs and so on.

Whitework is an ‘umbrella’ term used to describe many techniques. The seven main chapters outline the history and methods of working - Broderie Anglaise, Richellieu, Cutwork, Drawn thread, Pulled work, Shadow work, Montmellick, Ayrshire and Fine whitework.

Over 60 stitches are pictured with exceptional clarity and each one is accompanied by hints and tips for working it.

The first chapter covers materials and equipment and the last further experimental work. The book is illustrated with examples of contemporary work, some showing painted fabric, pearls, small amounts of colour and unusual yarns.

The authors have demonstrated how the various techniques enable whitework to fall gracefully and beautifully into the 21st century.

Whether you are a traditionalist or a textile artist ‘Contemporary Whitework’ is a lovely, generous, and comprehensive book which makes important reading for those who love making white on white.
