If you are looking for something new and different to inspire your creativity then this design source book of Aboriginal Designs is one that you should definitely look at.
The book is packed with illustrations all of which can be photocopied and used without having to seek prior permission. The designs are clear and well drawn.
At first I was a little disappointed that the designs within the book were not in colour but the longer I looked at the designs I found my imagination beginning to run riot at the endless possibilities they presented. You could research and use original colours or interpret the designs in a more contemporary colour palette.
There are lots of designs of animals, birds and figures and also lots of decorative pattern, borders and motifs, that could all be used in a variety of ways and used for many techniques. The designs, as you would expect from such an ancient art form, are very simple and would be perfect to use with children for collage and as an introduction to simple embroidery. Their simplicity also lends them to the serious craft person who could use more intricate techniques using appliqué and cutback work.I can’t wait to get started!
