Hello and welcome to the March edition of The Textile Directory newsletter. We’ve had a busy time this month, with trips to The Project Group in Oswestry and a Play Day at VSM in Redditch, where we had the opportunity to try out some of their sewing and embellisher machines. You can read about both outings below.

We also have news of some great workshops run by devoré artist Dionne Swift, who has kindly provided this month’s giveaway. Please read on for details of how to enter.

As always if you have any news or views that you want to share with us you can do so at the usual address, admin@thetextiledirectory.com or by calling us on 01386 760406. We would love to hear from you!

Best wishes Sara and Holly

The Project Group

Last month Craftspace and VSM held a series of workshops at The Project Group to help teach members new skills. Led by textile artist Karina Thompson and supported by the VSM education staff, the group were experimenting with Pfaff sewing and embellisher machines, developing their skills with the ultimate objective of producing a small range of items to sell. VSM and Craftspace have received an investment from A&B to develop their creative partnership. The A&B Investment Programme is funded by Arts Council England, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Scottish Executive.

The Project Group is an arts-based, not-for-profit community business that provides a creative environment for individuals who have experience of mental distress. It was started by Jo Davis 15 years ago as part of the health service. All members are now referred to Jo from mental health services across Shropshire and South Staffordshire. There are currently 35-40 members, who work together on various projects and commissions for the community.

Jo says, “Some of members only stay with us for a short time while they are getting back on their feet, while others are with us for much longer. We have had some members who have gone on to become staff here, while others go on to art school and a few are now professional makers.”

Approximately 15 members of The Project Group were chosen to take part in Karina’s workshops, which took place over four days. I had the fantastic opportunity of visiting The Project Group last month to see first-hand some of the great work that they are producing. Karina told me, “My aim has been to introduce people with a range of pre-existing skills to stitching and the embellisher machine, with a view to developing their ideas.” Karina has taught in colleges and a few different day schools, but has particularly enjoyed this project. She says, “What’s nice about this project is that people haven’t got any assumptions about what you can do with the machines. They aren’t fixed on doing things in a specific way.”

The workshops have been very well received by all who took part. Kevin Gibson, a member of The Project Group, explained “I hadn’t even used a sewing machine before these workshops. It’s a great way to learn new skills and now we can use these to get inspiration for our final products.” We will bring you more news of the final products the group make in a future edition of the newsletter.

Here we all are enjoying our day!

The Textile Directory Play Day

On Tuesday 4 March Holly and I, plus five lucky textile artists, enjoyed a fabulous day at the VSM headquarters in Redditch. We had the opportunity to play on their embroidery, embellisher and sewing machines, before each making an eco-shopping bag using the techniques we had learnt.

After we had all introduced ourselves, Pam Neave, our VSM tutor for the day, showed us how to use the embellisher machine. For many of us, this was the first experience we’d had with an embellisher machine and we all went home wanting one! We used scraps and off cuts of all kinds of material to create pretty rosettes and corsages, instant felt and much more – the only limit being our own imagination!

In the afternoon we moved on to create our project. On the one side of our eco-shopper we were creating some crazy patchwork using the Sapphire Sewing Machines and some wonderful tie-dye fabric provided by Laura Kemshall. On the other side we used the Designer SC Embroidery Machine to create an embroidery design, before heading back to the embellishers to add the finishing touches. We ended the day by using the overlocker to sew the seams and then headed home ready to put our creations to good use. As relative beginners using this kind of equipment, Holly and I were delighted to bring home an attractive, useful and (almost!) professional looking item.

It was also great to meet all the artists who joined us for the day, and put some faces to familiar names. Catherine Howard, an embroidery technician at Cleveland College of Art and Design was one of the lucky artists selected to come along. She says, “It was a really fantastic day and I’ve learnt so much. It was a great opportunity to try out the machines and ask Pam lots of questions.”

Pam says, “This has been one of the most enjoyable sessions I’ve ever done. It’s so nice to work with people who really want to be here and have such innovative ideas. I’m really looking forward to the next one.”

The day was provided to us and the five artists completely free of charge by VSM. Everyone at The Textile Directory would like to thank Pam Neave and VSM for a fun and inspiring day.

Book Review - Designing Patchwork on your Computer

Designing Patchwork on your Computer

Carol Phillipson

Published by A & C Black

ISBN: 9781408101438

Price: £19.99

Delivery: UK £2.00, Europe £4.10

Reviewed by Lindsay Roberts

This chunky square format book temptingly incorporates a CD in its front cover, inviting you to find out for yourself how easy the process can be. With guidance on using the basic Paint programme included in Microsoft Windows’ operating system, or Adobe Photoshop if you have a Mac, the author talks you through the essentials on each system to get you started.

After that you draw on the CD's resources (100 patterns and templates) or construct your own grids and start laying out your quilts. Very well illustrated with screen shots and stitched work, the pages follow a logical sequence so you quickly build skills. There follow twenty or more specific quilt designs with many illustrated modifications so that you can suit your own taste and fabrics.

For the keen patchworker who relishes the opportunity to test out new designs, then perhaps modify and re-colour them within minutes on screen, this book is a great how-to guide. With a little patience, you can master techniques which will save you hours of juggling patches and open up new possibilities.

Celebrity Chef to Launch Wonderwool Wales

Celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson will take to the catwalk at Wonderwool Wales in Powys this April to help promote some of the designer items that can be made with wool and natural fibres.

Wonderwool Wales, being held for the first time as a stand-alone show, promises to be bigger and better than ever. While maintaining a focus on Welsh wool and wool products, it is a celebration of the great diversity of all natural fibres. A range of exhibits, activities, demonstrations and competitions will provide plenty to interest, inspire and entertain, and with everything from raw materials to designer fashion, it offers something for everyone. More than 120 exhibitors will be there with products ranging from raw fibre to finished products such as jewellery, rugs, bags and clothing. Exhibitors include spinners, knitters, weavers and dyers. There will also be the chance to see alpacas, goats, angora rabbits, different sheep breeds and a sheep shearing display.

The catwalk, known at the event as a ‘sheepwalk’, will take place in a purpose built straw bale theatre, in keeping with the event’s countryside feel. It will feature a range of handmade items, all of which are on sale at the event. There will also be the opportunity to learn more about the techniques used to make the clothing and where the materials come from. The sheepwalk starts at 2pm on both days so make sure you don’t miss Antony’s performance!

Antony says, "I am really looking forward to coming to Mid Wales where I'll be sharing some of my favourite recipes using local ingredients to create my own 'Mid Wales Mouthfuls'. And don't miss my appearance on the Wonderwool Wales Sheepwalk! I hope to see you there.”

Wonderwool Wales will also include a Woolschool featuring a packed programme of workshops, talks and lectures led by local, national and international experts including the Welsh knitwear designer Sasha Kagan and Prudence Mapstone, a Knitting and Crochet expert from Australia.

Wonderwool Wales and Mid Wales Mouthful take place from 26-27 April 2008 at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, Powys. Admission to both events is £5, with children under 16 free. If you would like to attend the Woolschool events you will need to book in advance. More details are available on the Wonderwool Wales website www.wonderwoolwales.co.uk or contact Lee Price on 01982 552224.

Some examples of Dionne's work

Devoré and Stitch Workshops with Dionne Swift

Dionne Swift makes devoré images inspired by the moors and valleys in Yorkshire, using devoré processes on velvet to explore the changing structural qualities in the landscape. She also dyes and hand-paints the cloth, over-painting and employing dye reduction techniques to give the notion of depth. Dionne offers specialist devoré and stitch workshops for all levels of ability from her studio in Huddersfield, details of which can be found below.

Exploring The Bias - 7 June 2008

In this workshop you will explore the different options created by working with the bias of the fabric, rather than its warp and weft. By using the bias of the fabric it will twist, turn and stretch in different ways, and Dionne will teach you processes to take advantage of this. To book a place on this workshop please click here. The workshop takes place from 10-3.30 and places cost £50.

Exploring Devoré – 8 November 2008

This workshop guides you through the complex processes of devoré and is the perfect platform for further investigations into the technique. You will create samples and develop ideas ready to progress onto a larger piece of work. To book a place on this workshop please click here. The workshop takes place from 10-3.30 and places cost £50.

For those of you who prefer trying things out for yourselves, Dionne has produced a fantastic DIY Devoré It Yourself Kit, containing everything you need to make a beautiful devoré velvet scarf or wall hanging. Dionne says, “This kit is great for people who would like to attend a workshop but live too far away. They can get a great taste of devoré from this.” If you would like to buy a kit and see instructions of how to use it please click here.
