In Botswana and areas of South Africa charitable organisation Mothers for All is training groups of women to make stunning, eco-friendly beads from recycled materials – and joining in the ongoing fight against HIV/Aids at the same time.
In order to support the many thousands of care-givers raising Southern African Aids orphans, many of whom have very little support themselves, Mothers for All is teaching trainee ‘mothers’ new handicraft skills which they can then pass on to others.
As the income-generation groups grow and develop Mothers for All will introduce HIV and Aids education and awareness programmes to ensure that progress continues to be made. Included will be courses on living positively and making safer choices; overcoming stigma; food gardening and horticulture; and life skills counselling.
Mothers for All is also committed to the use of environmentally-friendly materials and techniques, with carbon off-set and environmental awareness programmes also planned. All beads are handcrafted from paper waste materials such as cardboard packaging, wrapping paper and newspaper that would otherwise end up in rubbish dumps. Finished products are packaged in recycled card where possible, and the groups are currently experimenting with glue comprised of biodegradable renewably-sourced materials.
Perhaps most important of all is the dignity which the scheme bestows on the women involved. Mothers for All’s first Botswanan groups are now producing consistently excellent and truly stunning beads and jewellery, which can be purchased online at http://www.injabulo.com/acatalog/Beads_from_Mothers_for_All.html
