Artists Take The Lead To Design Innovative Art for 2012

Article Added: 02/04/2009 13:49:00
Do you have inspirational creative ideas? Would you like to design a vibrant cultural revolution to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics?  Could you create an artistic celebration of culture using your talent? If yes, then you may be interested in an exciting new opportunity from Artists Taking the Lead.

The Arts Council England are ‘challenging artists to use the nation as a blank canvas’ and design a piece of artwork that responds to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. The project offers artists from across the UK the opportunity to create a £500,000 artwork that will represent their region. The country will be separated into 12 regions and the best entry from each area will be commissioned to take part in a final unifying ceremony before the opening of the London 2012 Olympic games, and hopefully create an artistic and cultural legacy that will continue long after 2012.

Artists Taking the Lead is looking for ideas that demonstrate an enthusiasm for innovative design and a willingness to take risks, in order to achieve a truly original idea. The idea for the commission must be led by an artist or group of artists, meaning that organisations such as higher education institutions that are not artist led are not eligible to apply. The submitted ideas can be artform specific or cross artform, and can be led individually or collaboratively. The essential element of the design brief is that submitted ideas must be representative of the themes and values of the Cultural Olympiad, which include bringing together culture and sport and making public spaces exciting through many forms of creative art.

The Arts Council are hoping to ‘create outstanding moments of creative excellence’ and ‘connect future generations with artistic communities’. The overall  winning pieces will be judged by a panel led by Sally Abbott, Director of Arts at the Arts Council  that also includes a group of six artists.

This project has very exciting prospects and HotHive Textiles would like to encourage all creative artists and designers to look for further information on the Artists Taking The Lead website, and maybe become involved in the most dynamic and cutting-edge cultural collaboration this decade!
