Women & Work - helping women in the fashion and textiles sectors reach their full potential

The Women & Work programme is a government-funded scheme aimed at women employed in the fashion and textiles sector. The aim of the programme, which is run by Skillfast UK, is to give women new skills to help them progress in their careers. It is open to women who design or manufacture clothing, footwear and textiles, and who are employed by a registered company with less than 5000 employees. If you have women in your business who could take on more roles and responsibilities with a little support then Women & Work can provide you with a grant of up to 75% of the cost of the training – up to a maximum of £500 per employee. This includes operational skills to allow them to take on a wider range of tasks, supervisory skills to give them the confidence to take on training roles, technical skills and leadership skills.

How it works

Step 1 – initial discussion

One of the sector-trained advisers will visit your company for a brief introductory discussion about the programme. At the meeting the adviser will ask some general questions about your business, the skills issues you face and the women in your workforce. This will ensure that the programme can be targeted to suit your business needs.

Step 2 – analysis report on your training needs

Your adviser will speak to the women you would like to take part in the programme to get an in-depth understanding of their current skills and training requirements. From these interviews the adviser will put together a detailed report, complete with training plans for each employee taking part in Women & Work.

Step 3 – grant offer

Your adviser will send you the report, which will include advice on suitable training providers (though you can source your own if you prefer). You will also receive a grant offer letter informing you of how much money you will receive to carry out the training.

Step 4 – training

The trainers will carry out the training detailed in your report.

Step 5 – claiming your grant

When the training is finished you will provide evidence of your contribution to Skillfast UK together with the invoice from the training provider as proof of what you have spent. Skillfast UK will then reimburse the amount agreed in your grant letter.

If you feel that you or someone in your work force could benefit from the scheme then please call Kay McGrath for an Expression of Interest form on 0113 2399 615 or visit www.skillfast-uk.org/womenandwork and complete the ‘take part’ form online. You must be able to complete your training and claim your grant by 31 March 2009.

Sheila Smith

Floral Felts

Two top textile artists to showcase their talents

Silk painter, Joanne Eddon and feltmaker, Sheila Smith are having a joint show of collaborative work called Floral Felts at Cedar Farm, Mawdesley, from 13 September to 2 November 2008.

The pair, who met at the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate where Joanne was exhibiting, discovered similarities in their approach to their individual crafts and have worked successfully together on various pieces.

Joanne, who works from a studio at Cedar Farm, has gained a strong reputation with her striking silk-painted textiles which are sold in galleries and shops throughout the UK. She has exhibited extensively in a successful 22 year career and has built-up a following of loyal customers eager to snap up her new work.

Sheila is a very experienced feltmaker who has been teaching feltmaking workshops for the last 17 years, both in the UK and abroad. She is perhaps most well known for the many books and publications she has written.

Their collection will include hand-painted, hand-stitched and hand-felted work which combines vibrant colours with new designs inspired by their love of flowers and patterns and from looking at the work of Klimt in Tate Liverpool's recent major exhibition.

The mixed showcase will focus on the possibilities of combining silk with felt and celebrate their unique approach to their craft. It can be seen in the foyer gallery in the art@cedarfarm building, Cedar Farm Galleries, Back Lane, Mawdesley, Lancashire L40 1TG  from 10-5 on Tuesdays-Sundays. Book Review - Big Book of Fashion Illustration

Big Book of Fashion Illustration

By Martin Dawber

Published by Batsford

ISBN 13: 9780713490459

384 pages

Price: £19.99

Reviewed by Katherine Connorton

The mention of fashion illustration conjures up the image of an elongated sketch. This has been a common misconception, of the nine-head-length stereotype. Fashion has never conformed to normality, so why should its artistic representation? Fashion illustration is no longer just a sketch of a garment, it’s an art in its own right. This book showcases the best of over 250 international fashion artists and illustrators. It is a comprehensive collection of varied illustrative styles. Traditional mediums, such as pen and ink, sit alongside digital creations as well as collage and found objects. From women and menswear to beauty, the Big Book of Fashion Illustration is a great visual source to any student or anyone who has an interest in Fashion and Illustration.
