Calling All Textile Artists: How You Can Get Involved in a Ground-breaking Conference

Japanese designer Kenya Hara will be exhibiting his work at RIBA London in May 2008, with a conference coinciding with its opening day. The exhibition, called Haptic Design, will feature a range of Kenya’s work that focuses on domestic design, including textiles, paper, a lampshade made from hair and a mobile phone made from a jelly substance.

The conference, Memory and Touch: An exploration of non-verbal communication, aims to kick-start a discussion between academics, curators and artists about Haptic Design, a relatively new concept in the UK. The organisers of the conference, Lesley Millar and Liz Cooper from the University College for the Creative Arts, Epsom, are very keen to have textile artists involved.

Lesley says, “I have been working with textiles all my life so they are very familiar to me. But in terms of the conference themes of memory, touch and textural communication, I feel that textiles are one of the best ways to portray these as they are so closely linked. One of the first things we come into contact with as babies are textiles, so they begin providing us with memories as soon as we are born.”

Artists and designers are invited to submit papers that they could then present at the conference. They are encouraged to discuss their experiences of touch in their work and any research they have undertaken on this subject. Those selected will then be offered presentation slots between 10 and 30 minutes at the conference.

Unfortunately the University College for the Creative Arts won’t be able to pay for any expenses involved in the preparation and presentation of papers, or for travel to the conference, which will be held on 7 May 2008 at the Royal Institute of British Architects, Portland Place, London.

If you would like to apply to take part in the conference please send a one-page (350 word) abstract of your ideas and a brief CV to lmillar@ucreative.ac.uk by 30 January. Preference will be given to those applications that include images of your work and research. If you prefer you can post your application and CV to Lesley Millar, University College for the Creative Arts, Ashley Road, Epsom, Surrey KT18 5BE.

Scarf Detail

An Exploration Piece

Charlotte Grierson

Charlotte Grierson is a textile artist who creates hand-woven textiles, producing both functional and experimental pieces. I spoke to Charlotte to find out more about her work.

Can you tell me a bit more about the work you do?

My work is all hand weaving, and for the last few years I have been mainly focused on scarves. Recently I have been working mostly on commissions and I also enjoy doing experimental work using wires and paper yarns. I like to experiment with structures and materials to see what surface textures I can get. I also hand pleat fabrics and then work into the pleated surface with pastels and oils. I tend to frame these experimental pieces and turn them into wall hangings.

What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I am working on a commission of a blind for a private client. I have been working on several projects for this client for much of last year.

I Understand that you had a commission for the Tate Modern a few years ago, can you tell us a bit more about that?

I was commissioned to design some scarves that were going to be sold in the shop at the museum. They gave me a selection of paintings to choose from to base my design on and I chose Turner’s ‘Sun Setting Over A Lake’. In addition to this I was commissioned to produce another 30 scarves a few months later, which were designed from Whistler’s ‘Nocturne: Blue and Silver – Chelsea’.

What are your hopes for your business in 2008?

I am interested in getting more commission work and doing more experimental weaving. I am keen to find new fibres and yarns to experiment with.

Where do you get most of your business from and do you find it difficult to attract new clients?

I find doing shows such as Chelsea Craft Fair and Origin are good ways to meet new people. I also get quite a few enquiries through my website. I think having an Internet presence is important as it gets people to know your name.

Where can people buy your work?

My work is on sale at various galleries throughout England, details of which can be found on my website. I also hold open studios at the end of the year.
