Jelly Roll Inspirations

Jelly Roll Inspirations
By Pam and Nicky Lintott
Published by David & Charles
Price: £14.99
Reviewed by Bron Ellis

This book follows on from two previous books by the same author, Jelly Roll Quilts and Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts. For those who are not familiar with Jelly Rolls, they are bundles of forty strips of pre-assorted fabrics 2-½ inches wide by 42 inches long supplied by Moda. They are available in many colour and design ways and make piecing of simple quilt designs quicker as the work of cutting the strips and fabric selection has already been done by Moda. This has its limitations as the standard width of the strips dictates mainly simple geometric designs but they are very popular and this book provides lots of good suggestions.

Stitching to Dye in Quilt Art

Stitching to Dye in Quilt Art: Colour, Texture and Distortion
By C. June Barnes
Published by Batsford
ISBN:  978 0 7134 90701
£18.99
Reviewed by Sandra Wyman

I read numerous books on textiles, but rarely have I come across one as exciting as this; within minutes of opening it I was itching to get started on the techniques it describes.

June Barnes has won numerous awards as a textile artist.  In this book she describes the techniques she has developed in stitching and then dyeing fabric to produce vivid and unexpected colour-combinations and fascinating textural effects, including techniques not seen elsewhere.

The first part of the book contains a series of exercises which guide the reader through the various processes involved in producingstitched fabrics, then dyeing and overdyeing them for a variety of effects.  The second section deals with the effects produced by shrinkage of various fabrics and distortions achieved by combining these with items such as zippers and plastic shapes, which resist shrinking.

This book is exceptionally well-written – crisp, witty, to the point and engaging – and sumptuously illustrated.  Above all it is successful in opening up a wholenew area for exploration by art quilters and other textile artists.

Creative Tucks and Textures for Quilts and Embroidery

Creative Tucks and Textures for Quilts and Embroidery
By Jennie Rayment
Published by Batsford
ISBN: 9780713490534
Price: £14.99
Reviewed by Ruth Singer

This is a comprehensive, absorbing and enjoyable book. For those with a love of fabric manipulation, this book is a must. It is an easy to use guide to many fascinating techniques, which go beyond the normal realms of quilting or embroidery. It covers tucks, folded and interlocked shapes plus inserted and manipulated shapes which are presented for use in quilt blocks, but could be equally applicable to other textile projects. Rayment’s trademark pleats, folds and tucks are explained in great detail, with endless variations and ideas for embellishment, creative variations and combined techniques. It includes working in circles as well as squares, which adds an exciting new dimension to tucks and folds, plus an interesting chapter on the use of bias cut strips, including how to cut continuous bias. At the end of the book is a comprehensive chapter on piecing techniques, which is invaluable to those wanting to incorporate their creative experiments into larger work. A simple and informative short chapter on quilting completes the techniques part of the book, and a small selection of projects and a gallery round it off nicely.
