Profile
Julie has been researching and developing the Indian technique of Ply Splitting, used traditionally for animal harnesses, since 1989.
She designs and makes wearable and sculptural pieces working mainly in linen, hemp or cotton yarn. The importance of yarn selection, the cord making process and use of colour in relation to structure is vital to her work. She has exhibited and sold her work in the UK, Europe and USA and also works to commission. Julie enjoys teaching workshops to groups throughout the UK, both to beginners and those with some experience of Ply-Splitting. She also gives talks on her study visits to India showing her colourful collection of animal related regalia and demonstrating cord making and Ply-Splitting. In 2006, she published the book ‘Ply-Split Braiding, an introduction to Designs in Single Course Twining’.
